Indonesia has long been known as a country that supplies most (around 90%) of the world’s patchouli oil needs, 70% of which once came from Aceh. Patchouli oil is extracted from the leaves and branches of the patchouli plant (Pogostemon cablin) through a steam distillation process. The quality of patchouli oil is often assessed based on aroma, flexibility (viscosity), and the content of certain active compounds that give it its characteristic aroma. Until now, Aceh’s patchouli plants have become one of Aceh’s leading commodities that are able to produce crude patchouli oil with a patchouli alcohol content of more than 30%. The high patchouli alcohol content makes the quality of Aceh’s patchouli oil even better, so it deserves to be called the world’s best quality patchouli oil. Over time, many farmers in Aceh have cultivated patchouli plants because the plant has several advantages that make it an attractive choice for local farmers. One of the reasons is because Aceh has a climate that is suitable for the growth of patchouli plants, making it easier for farmers to cultivate.
